National Jewish Women Los Angeles Section






NCJW/LA 2009-2010 Scholarship

The National Council of Jewish Women provides scholarships, regardless of religious belief, to those who live in or attend school in the Greater Los Angeles area, including portions of Ventura and Orange County. Applications must be received during the application dates for consideration. Applicants may apply for only two scholarships per cycle. This highly competitive selection criterion includes the ability to articulate a clear state of goals, the likelihood of goal attainment, and the personal courage and personal commitment of the applicant and financial need.

Award $1,000.00
The Sol Goldberg Childcare Subsidy


To qualify, an applicant must be entering or continuing school in an accredited institution in order to learn a marketable skill which will lead to economic self-sufficiency. The award is not restricted to any field or academic program as the award is intended to ease the financial burden of childcare for a parent in school.

Award $2,000.00
The June Miller Nursing Education Scholarship


This award is given to a woman committed to, and qualified for, entering or continuing the academic pursuit of a career in nursing. Recipients of the June Miller Award may also be eligible for the Inger Lawrence-M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship.

Award $2,000.00
Inger Lawrence-M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship


This award is given to women committed to, and qualified for, continuing the academic pursuit of a degree in nursing. Some units toward a nursing degree must be completed prior to applying.

Award $2,000.00
Susan Schulman Begley Memorial Scholarship


This award is given to a woman who is establishing herself as a single-parent head of household and due to extreme circumstances, following the dissolution of an abusive or emotionally traumatic relationship, having no other adequate financial means, requires funds for immediate needs for herself and her children including rent and food.

2nd CYCLE
The following applications are accepted August 1 through November 1. Scholarships are awarded in December.

Award $1,000.00
The Ellis Scholarship for Childcare


To qualify, an applicant must be entering or continuing school in an accredited institution in order to learn a marketable skill which will lead to economic self-sufficiency. The award is not restricted to any field or academic program as the award is intended to ease the financial burden of childcare for a parent in school. Applicants can be either married or single. The award is made in two payments of $500.00 upon written verification of continuing childcare enrollment and current school transcripts.

Award $500.00
The Singerman / Nosseck Memorial Scholarship


To qualify, a candidate must be enrolling or enrolled in a vocational school or trade college. The scholarship is intended to ease the burden of the applicant starting or continuing their education and not limited to a particular field of study.

Award $2,000.00
The June Miller Nursing Education Scholarship


This award is given to a woman committed to, and qualified for, entering or continuing the academic pursuit of a career in nursing. Recipients of the June Miller Award may also be eligible for the Inger Lawrence-M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship.

Inger Lawrence-M.R. Bauer Foundation Nursing Studies Scholarship


This award is given to women committed to, and qualified for, continuing the academic pursuit of a degree in nursing. Some units toward a nursing degree must be completed prior to applying. Applicant may apply in successive years.

Award $1,000.00
Samuel Schulman Memorial Scholarship


To qualify, an applicant must be a single mother entering or continuing school in an accredited institution in order to learn a marketable skill, which will lead to economic independence. The award is made in two payments of $500.00. The second payment will be received after written confirmation of status and current school transcripts from the recipient.

Global Volunteers Scholarship Opportunity

John T. Petters Service Scholarship for Students



Global Volunteers is an organization that was founded in 1984. They offer short-term volunteer service opportunities focused on community development. "Global Volunteers mobilizes some 200 service-learning teams year-around to work in more than 100 host communities worldwide, and has gained national and international recognition as a leader in this field."(globalvolunteers.org)

John T. Petters Foundation is partnering up with Global Volunteers is offering a limited number of partial scholarships to undergraduate students in the early 2010. The recipient is responsible for the remaining balance as well as securing and paying for their own airfare to and from the host country. Global Volunteers provides tips and tools that can assist in fundraising.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

1. Must be enrolled at a college or university as an undergraduate student
2. Must be a US Citizen
3. Have proof of financial need
4. Be willing to volunteer internationally for a minimum of three weeks

The completed application along with all documentation specified in the application and an official university/college transcript must be received by Global Volunteers, Attn: Karisa Grosser, 375 E. Little Canada Road, Saint Paul, MN 55117, before August 1st, 2009. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
